Why We Still Need Feminism (Oh And By The Way, You’re A Feminist)

Jezebel ran a really good editorial the other month called What None Else Will Tell You About Feminism. The basic premise is this:

If you are not a feminist (or something blamelessly ignorant, like a baby or a ferret or a college freshman), then you are a bad person. Those are the only options. You either believe that women are people, or you don’t.

That is the general tone of this treatise (wow, that’s the second time I’ve used that word today) and I frickin love it!. Many men and women are really very unaware of what feminism is. It’s not scary, it doesn’t make you a lesbian. It’s very similar to being a not-racist. Like, really really similar to being not-a-bigot.

A lot of folk think that in the 21st century, there is no need for feminism because “women ARE equal to men in every way that counts.” Hooray! We won!

Not so much, the above video outlines really wonderfully some of the reasons for which feminism is still very necessary and needed in our cultural conversation.

And just to tie this into sex, there’s some evidence to prove that, in matriarchal societies, men end up having more sex with more partners than they would in a patriarchy. So get in line to get your Feminist Membership card. It’s free, the only prerequisite is that you not be a sexist bigot who doesn’t believe in the equal personhood of all people regardless of gender, race, sexual identity and/or any other self aspect that has nothing to do with their status as a person.

  1. Judithann says:

Nowhere in the video or the Jezebel piece is human trafficking mentioned; apparently, getting free birth control is more of a priority for feminists than helping women who have essentially been kidnapped and sold into slavery. And that is why I am not a feminist.

  2. I hate that the word feminist has such a negative feeling involved with it with most people. I was actually just talking to my boyfriend about it the other day and I got very worked up over what came to light. If he were to tell his coworkers (a bunch of men working overnight stock) that his girlfriend was a feminist they would say things like “oh I’m so sorry for you” or even worse “I’ll straighten her out for you”. If he were to tell them that he was a feminist they would call him derogatory terms and he would not be invited to sit at their table during break anymore (which from what I’ve been told he avoids doing anyway).

  3. That video was great. Thank you for sharing it!
